Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, with a modern tropical
lifestyle and an international airport, where you can get your Darwin car
hire. They say, "Darwin, if you never
never go, you'll never never know". The "never never" is the vastness
of NT. From here you can visit, World Heritage areas,
Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Parks.
Darwin has a cosmopolitan feel as it's closer to Asia than Sydney. You
may even go troppo like the locals, and forget to leave. Don't miss the Mindil
Beach Markets, fish feeding on Fanny Bay and the great sunsets.
From Darwin car rental is a must for the drive south
(don't miss the 'Pink Panther Pub' in Larrimah - icon of the
north with its Pink Panther and unique wall paper - the highest bar in NT), to Alice Springs and
Uluru, the scene is perfectly set to fully experience this diverse and
exciting region at your own pace.
Along the road
from Katherine to Tennant Creek you will find such attractions as John
Flynn Memorial, Attack Creek Historical Reserve and historical townships
like Newcastle Waters and Larrimah. Cutta Cutta Caves, 27km (17 miles)
south of Katherine, are a series of labyrinthine limestone caverns
connected by narrow passages which meander for about 700m (2,296 feet)
beneath the surface. Mataranka, 106km (66 miles) south east from
Katherine, once part of a huge sheep station, is now a nature park with
camping grounds. It is known for its thermal pool set in a tropical forest
of tall palms and eucalypts.
